Cosmin HĂRȘIAN has emerged as an exciting musician who has been praised for performances at prestigious venues throughout Europe, United States, Canada and China. A flexible and versatile musician, Mr. Harsian has performed either as a conductor, soloist, orchestral player or chamber musician. Among the most important ensembles he has performed with are: Banatul Philharmonic Orchestra – Romania, The National Romanian Opera from Timisoara, The Romanian Youth Orchestra, Europa Symphony, the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, Boulder Philharmonic, Blue Lake Fine Arts Orchestra, Lawrence Chamber Orchestra, Illinois Valley Symphony, etc. Dr. Harsian is the founder of the La Stravaganza Clarinet Quartet who was formed in 2009 and has a rich national and international performance activity. During the period since the quartet was formed, it has been invited to perform at prestigious artistic events in Romania, Hungary, Serbia, Italy, Spain and Norway.
Additionally, Mr. Harsian has participated in many national and international competitions for clarinet and has won several important awards. Most recently, in 2007 he was the winner of the Solo Competition at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp Festival in Michigan, U.S. Also, he has had the opportunity to perform in clarinet masterclasses offered by several of the world-renown musicians of today such as: Karl Leister, Bil Jackson, David Etheridge, Russell Dagon, Loren Kitt, Paul Garner, Michael Wayne, Frank Kowalsky and others. He has refined his conducting skills in courses offered by Dumitru Goia, Alexander Walker, David Neely and assisted to conducting courses offered by Leonard Slatkin, Per Borin, Nicolas Paquet and Ekhart Wycik.
As a college educator, between 2006-2009 Dr. Hărșian has taught as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Kansas, and since 2009 he is Associate Professor of Clarinet at the West University of Timișoara, Romania. Currently he is the conductor of Borge Brass Band and Vestvågøy Janitsjar.
Dr. Hărșian holds a bachelor’s degree from West University of Timișoara, Romania, a Master’s degree from Northern Illinois University and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Kansas where, during his studies, he was the winner of the Hamilton Fellowship – a prestigious three-year scholarship. His mentors include: Dr. Dumitru Goia, Dr. Stephanie Zelnick, Dr. Larry Maxey, Dr. Gregory Barrett and Mrs. Rodica Sas.
